AC James Hall and Stearns Hall

Amherst College is a prestigious liberal arts school in Massachusetts that was founded in 1821 in the town of the same name. Packed with more than its share of historical significance, Noah Webster (of dictionary fame) was one of the original trustees for this college that graduated its first African-American student in 1826

When the school needs to build a new facility, it must adhere to the historical quality of the surroundings, while also seeking quality and durability in every step of the process. The James and Stearns residence halls that were completed in 2005 feature Stromberg’s cornice crowning the top of the structures.

Manufactured from Stromberg’s Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC), the cornice of these buildings is able to stand up to the repeated rainy seasons and strong Massachusetts winter spells that come with the area. In repeated tests, it has proven to be more durable than the original concrete used in the past – especially in locations constantly exposed to seawater.
